Fall may be a terrific time of year for fun crafts but you don’t want
to be so focused on the fun that you forget about the great educational opportunities
that the season presents. Sure, it’s great to carve pumpkins and make
Thanksgiving turkeys out of construction paper during these months. But in addition
to these arts and crafts, you can come up with a number of different fall activities
which give your children great educational skills. In fact, there are fall activities
to cover all of the basic school subjects and then some.

Here are some educational fall activities for each subject:

Math

Counting activities using fall themes. The “5
Little Pumpkins” song is just one example of a fall-themed counting
activity that can be enjoyed by kids while they learn some new skills.

Measuring and counting when making fall recipes.
Use cooking activities during the fall to warm up the house or classroom
and get the kids using math during daily activities.

Reading / Writing

There are many different stories out there about fall.
Look for those that are about the changing of seasons as well as those that
relate to the fall holidays.

Work on learning the alphabet by practicing with fall themes.
For example, “P is for Pumpkin” is a good way to work on that
particular letter.

Make a fall story book. Paste leaves and other fall items
into a scrapbook and then work with kids to write a story that relates to
fall.

Science

Go outside and observe the changing seasons with kids.
Keep photo and written journals about these changes.

Fall animals. Activities involving squirrels and acorns
are great for teaching kids about animals and fall.

Social Studies

Use the holidays such as Columbus Day and Thanksgiving to teach kids about
history.

Explore how different cultures explore holidays in different
ways to teach kids about diversity.

If you taught kids about Labor Day early in the season, you can reinforce
these lessons by bringing them back up again. Point out that work
and community are important educational areas at all times of the
year.

Other subjects

Music. Kids love music and they learn a lot from it so
incorporate fall themes and music this season. One great activities making
musical shakers out of gourds by cleaning them out and filling them with beans.

Motor skills. The arts and crafts that are associated with
fall themes are good lessons in and of themselves because they teach kids
motor skills which are an important part of the rest of their education.

Environmental lessons. Kids can learn environmental lessons
during the fall months by getting out and exploring nature. Take kids hiking
or camping before it gets too cold and use it as a way to teach them about
how to treat the earth kindly and why that’s important.

Cooking with kids can be one of the most terrific activities that can happen
in a home. Sure, there’s going to be mess and there’s always a little
bit of risk when putting kids in the kitchen, but cooking with kids
teaches a variety of lessons that will apply to all areas of life and education.
Plus, cooking with kids helps to establish a bond between you that will last
a lifetime.

Here are just some of the things that kids can learn when you cook
with them:

Nutrition. Kids should learn healthy eating habits
starting from a young age and what better way to learn them than through
learning healthy cooking? By learning about food and their bodies, kids
are learning some basic things about science that will help them in
school down the line. And they’re learning lessons about good
health that will help them for a lot longer than that.

Reading. Cooking involves reading directions and
looking at labels. By cooking with kids, you are helping them gain reading
skills in a natural environment.

Motor skills. When you’re cooking with kids, you’re
moving plates around and pouring items. When they help, they improve their
motor skills.

Math. Cooking involves measurements and times which are
important foundations in math. Cooking with kids gets them used to using math
in a daily environment which makes them more comfortable with it and therefore
more proficient at it.

Taking care of themselves. Children who learn how to cook
are less likely to be adolescents that eat out all of the time. They know
how to take care of themselves in the kitchen so they will.

Attention and focus. Nobody wants to eat burned cookies
and your kids will rapidly learn to focus on the task at hand if they’re
in charge of making sure the cookies don’t burn!

Here are some ideas for cooking with kids that help you to
teach them these skills without causing too much of a mess or safety risk in
the kitchen:

Stick to recipes that are simple. Cooking with kids isn’t
the same as cooking a romantic four-course meal for your spouse. You should
stick to one or two items that have only a few ingredients each so that the
kids can be involved with all parts of cooking.

Let children find a favorite dish and let them make it once a week.
Yes, you might get sick of it but stability is good for kids and if you know
that you’re always cooking spaghetti together on Tuesdays, you enhance
that.

Start early if you want the cooking to be done at a certain time.
It’s not healthy to cook under stress and it’s not a good habit
for kids to get into so make sure you have plenty of time to make the meals.

Read recipe books with your kids and have them pick out some of
the dishes. If they’re involved in the planning, the shopping
and the cooking, they’ll develop good food habits, learn great lessons
and enjoy their meals.

Have fun. You will look back on cooking with kids as hours
that were spent together. These will be fond memories so enjoy them while
you can.

Computers are not
the wave of the future; they are the way that we operate right here and right
now. Because of this, it’s important to make use of computer software
as early on as you can in your child’s education. Preschool software
is designed to get your children used to using computers so that they’ll
be able to maximize their learning potential in the years to come. Preschool
software also makes use of multiple methods of learning to make sure that your
child learns quickly in the formative years when education is picked up quickly.
And preschool software is also great for parents because it enhances the learning
process and gives you more tools for educating your child.

that is designed for preschoolers can help your child get a jump start on
their education. Kids start using computers in school in the early
elementary years and your child will be ahead of the game if she already
knows the basics about using a computer. By becoming computer-ready at an
early age, she’ll be more equipped than others to adapt to changes
in technology that will inevitably come along during the years that she’s
in school. And she’ll also be more skilled at using the computer as
a tool for learning which is supplemental to her non-computer education,
giving her a range of different tools to maximize her learning.

In addition to preparing
your child for the years to come, preschool software is great for the
education that your child needs right now. When appropriately selected
to match her developmental stage and to coincide with the rest of her preschool
curriculum, preschool software can actually teach your child some
of what she needs to know. It makes use of multiple types of learning styles
to really help your child develop her brain in a variety of ways. Audio tools
can be used to enhance language skills and to use music for improving preschool
curriculum. Video tools can be used to engage your child’s attention and
assist with visual learning. And interactive preschool software can help your
child’s kinesthetic learning abilities. By using preschool software to
develop your child’s different methods of learning, you can help her to
adapt a multi-modal approach to learning that will make it easier for her to
learn her preschool curriculum. And it will also help her learning in the future.

And preschool software
doesn’t just help your child; it helps you as a parent. Preschool
software provides you with a number of different tools for improving your child’s
learning. This is great for the home school parent who wants to make
use of as many tools as possible for his child’s education. And often,
this software comes with helpful tips and resources that make educating your
preschooler even easier. Of course, this does require some additional work.
You’ll want to make sure that you understand the software and review it
before using it along with your preschooler. But the advantages far outweigh
the changes you’ll have to make to incorporate preschool software into
your child’s life.

And even those parents who aren’t homeschooling their kids find that these
printable worksheets are good for preschoolers to pass the time while learning
new and important skills. They’re great for parents because they’re

Here are some things
This helps you to identify the preschool printable worksheets that are
right for your child at any given time and gives you an idea of how
worksheets for math and science, reading and writing and a number of
other different subjects. Mix them up so your child gets a well-rounded
education.

Keep
an eye out for color! Sure, it costs a little bit more money to print
out color worksheets but your preschooler will be more drawn to these. You
can mix them in with black-and-white printable worksheets to save on cost.
When your preschooler is working on the black-and-white ones, encourage the
use of colored pencils and crayons to liven up the page and keep her interested
in the work.

Find
worksheets that have easy-to-understand directions. As your preschooler
gets older, you’ll want to encourage her to read some of the directions
for herself so find worksheets that are designed with this goal in mind. Often,
these include pictures with the directions to make it easier for your child
to identify what she’s supposed to be doing.

Use themed
worksheets around different holidays and events.
You can find preschool printable worksheets for various holidays as well as
for general seasons (like summer). These help to inspire your child to integrate
learning and the rest of life.

Consider
creating your own printable worksheets.
You can modify existing printable worksheets on your computer to make them
more interesting for your child. For example, change the names in stories
to your child’s name on reading worksheets. These little changes can
really personalize her preschool education and make it more relevant to her.

Of course, preschool
printable worksheets aren’t the only thing you’ll want your child
to work off of when doing learning at home. If you can find a Preschool
Program that incorporates worksheet use into a bigger curriculum
that has related projects and other activities, you’ll really complete
your child’s preschool learning. But you should definitely make use of
the printable worksheets that are out there to help your child learn new concepts
and practice various skills.

are a terrific part of a good home preschool program. Lapbooks combine
all of the work done in a single subject area to really pull it together for
your child. They can be reviewed at later dates to make sure that learning is
cumulatively building itself. But more than this, they give your preschooler
(and older kids as well) something to look at where they can see their progress.
This can be a great source of pride which allows children to be more successful
in their learning over the long run. And they’re fun for you to put together
with your child; they basically take the joy of scrapbooking and apply it to
education.

to this system to make the lapbooks more personalized. As you’re
putting the lapbooks together with your child, you’ll be reviewing
the subject matter that she’s already learned which helps to reinforce
that learning. And every time that your child takes out the lapbooks
to show them off, she’ll be re-learning that material again.

And she will definitely
want to show off her lapbooks. Children of all ages, and especially preschool
children, love to be proud of themselves. They like showing off their independence
and their knowledge to others who are supportive of their developmental growth.
So whenever favorite aunts and uncles, family friends and grandparents come
to visit, you can pull out the lapbooks so your child can show off
all that she knows. She’ll be proud of herself which will encourage
her to continue on with her studies, learning more so that she’ll have
more to share. And as you watch her sharing all that she’s learned, you’ll
be proud of her … and maybe even a little bit proud of yourself for all
of the education that you’ve already given to her.

Besides being a
terrific tool for compiling your child’s work and encouraging her to continue
it, the lapbooks are a great activity that you can share with your
child. They’re a part of the learning process that is truly just
fun to do. You and your child can work together in scrapbook style to get everything
put together. And when your child looks back on what her home school education
was like, she’ll probably remember these times as fun. Add to them by
creating a ritual like listening to music, making and eating pop corn together
or going shopping for stickers to add to the lapbooks. These little touches
will make creating the lapbooks a shared experience that you’ll both
look forward to … and then look back on fondly!

The Internet
has changed education. It has changed the way that research is done.
It has changed the sheer amount of information that both parents and students
have access to. And it has changed the way that parents help their children
learn. So if you haven’t gotten used to using the Internet to teach your
child, you’d better jump on the bandwagon. This tool is here to stay and
you’ll want to start in the preschool years to make sure that your child’s
educational foundation is well-laid in those early years.

But where
do you start with using the Internet to teach your preschooler? After
all, there is such a vast amount of information on the Internet and it often
has conflicting information and confusing approaches to preschool education.
You’re sure that some of it’s great and you’re equally sure
that some of it is probably not good for your preschooler at all. So if you
aren’t knowledgeable about preschool online, where do you begin?

Here are some tips
for using the Internet to teach your child:

Look
for programs with an offline component.
It’s easy for any old person to throw up a blog site or a web
store selling you information and software for online preschool. It’s
much more difficult to set up an actual business that uses both online
and offline resources for preschool online. So, if you’re looking
for quality, you’ll want to look for a place that is as happy
to provide you with workbooks as it is to send you a preschool software
CD.

Find
programs that make use of a number of different learning styles.
Some children are naturally good listeners whereas others needs hands-on interaction
to really understand the lessons they’re supposed to be learning. Find
preschool Internet options that use all different types of learning methods
to better enhance your child’s online education.

Take
a class yourself.
If you aren’t proficient with the Internet yet, it’s about time
that you got started. After all, in a few years, you’re going to have
to concern yourself with issues about your child’s safety online and
you want to know what you need to know about using the Internet. So get yourself
up to date and keep yourself abreast of new information.

Review
all sites and software alone before using it to teach your child.
Sure, this takes some added work. But there are unsafe sites on the Internet
that aren’t going to help your child’s education. Find the ones
that work best for you and share only those with your preschool, monitoring
all computer activity while it occurs.

Use the
Internet as just one part of an overall program. You should be engaged
in interaction with your child that includes all kinds of different things.
Preschoolers need to play with blocks and other tactile things as much as
they need to learn online. And they need to be out in the sunshine getting
some physical education as much as they need to have their downtime. Using
the Internet to teach your child is important but it’s only one of the
many education tools that you have at your disposal.

Make
use of the resources available to parents online. Most good online
preschool programs provide some additional information and website links for
parents to assist them in using the site. Make use of these tools so that
you can do your best to educate your child on the Internet.

a kit that can be started at any time during the year.
Many preschool curriculum kits follow a standard September – June
school calendar. However, your child may work more quickly or slowly
than this pace. Find kits that can be started at any date.

Find
preschool curriculum kits that are age-specific.
General preschool kits expect that a two-year-old and a five-year-old
will be learning basically the same skills using the same methods. This
obviously doesn’t make any sense since children of these ages
are very different. Find preschool curriculum kits that offer something
different for different age groups. One for two
year olds, another for three
year olds and a third for pre-kindergarten
ages would be a good choice.

Look
for kits that have workbooks, tear-out sheets and supplemental projects.
You want to be able to stimulate your child’s learning in a range of
different ways. After all, she’s going to be bored if she’s just
working out of a workbook every day. Good preschool curriculum kits will have
project ideas. Some even have computer software to enhance your child’s
learning options.

See if
you can find a curriculum kit that has some re-useable materials.
Some preschool curriculum kits come with workbooks that use wipe-off
markers to allow your child to re-use the pages. This is terrific
because it lets children practice the things that are difficult for them in
order to master them.

Seek
out multi-subject preschool curriculum kits. You want your child
to have a well-rounded education so be sure to find kits that include a number
of different basic educational subjects. For example, a kit that has reading
/ writing materials, science and social studies education and some supplementary
subjects will provide your preschooler with the right tools to do well in
her upcoming educational years.

Use preschool
curriculum kits that work for you. You don’t want the hottest
new thing on the market if it’s not going to work with the style you
prefer for teaching your child. A kit that you are naturally inclined towards
is the best way to go. Also, one which has additional resources for parents
is always helpful.

The fact of the matter is
that you’re probably going to make some mistakes as you educate your preschooler.
That’s part of the learning process for both of you! But you don’t
want to make the mistake of choosing the wrong preschool curriculum kit because
that’s the foundation of those learning years. So, rely on some basic
tips, go with your gut and don’t be afraid to choose a new program if
the one you’re trying doesn’t work for you.

started to look in to the options for homeschooling your children, you’ve
probably already realized that there are many different educational approaches
that you can take to homeschooling. One of those choices is to use the “Classical
Homeschooling” model. Of all of the homeschooling methods that
are available to you, this is the one that relies most heavily on the major
works, which are eventually studied in public schools (and even later on in
college!) In order to make a decision about whether or not classical homeschooling
is right for your family, you need to know a little bit more about it.

Here is
what you should know about classical homeschooling:

          homeschooling
is the name for an educational style that is based on the underlying
assumption that the “classics” once taught in all schools
should be the foundation of a child’s education. It believes that
these teach logic and communication, which are critical tools for learning
to think and express yourself.

There
are two segments in classical homeschooling – trivium and quadrivium.
The latter is for the university level and does not apply to what you’re
seeking today except that you should know that you are preparing your
child for this when using a classical homeschool curriculum.

There
are three basic areas of education, which make up the trivium stage of Classical
Homeschooling.
The first is grammar, which is made up of learning basic facts in all areas
of education. The second is dialectic which is the teaching of logic and reasoning.
And the third is rhetoric, which applies the basic facts and reasoning skills
of the other two stages to communication and expression.

Things that your
child might study using a classical homeschooling education include classic
works of literature (such as Shakespeare, poetry and classic fiction),
languages (Latin, English and possibly a third classic language), history
and philosophy, classic art and music (including Renaissance art history and
composers such as Beethoven) and basic math and science.

Classical
homeschooling is considered one of the most difficult kinds of homeschooling
in terms of the material that children learn and the strictness with which
they study. Children that are likely to enter a competitive school in the
future often benefit from the classical homeschooling style.

In general,
classical homeschooling comes from a foundation in Christian thinking
and education.

In summary, classically homeschooling
clearly relies on a well-rounded exploration of the major topics ultimately
covered in public schools and universities across the nation. It tends to address
these topics more thoroughly than many public schools do today and is often
considered difficult as far as homeschooling curriculums go. Parents who are
interested in educating their children in the classics and who are comfortable
providing a homeschool setting, which is more structured than loose, will probably
find that this is an appealing method of approaching homeschooling.

  today on Bongo
Mirror’s Reflections and Bongo Mirror was discussing the
fact that a couple years ago she was reading a book that stated that Preschoolers
would defend the fact that 1 (one) is the smallest number. I found that hard
to believe… after all I was sure that my Preschooler, who would be starting
Kindergarten in the fall, knew that Zero (0) was the smallest number. So, I
asked my daughter, “Hannah, I have a question for you… What is the
smallest number?” To my surprise she answered, “One.” I was
truly surprised. After all, I have discussed the number zero with Hannah many
times since she was two while teaching her Preschool
at Home. So, I said to Hannah, “One? What about Zero?”
She then said, “Oh yeah!!” She got it. But, I was very surprised
that Zero wasn’t her first answer. She didn’t defend that one is
the smallest number, however it wasn’t her first choice.

is an important skill which your child is going to need to learn and make use
of throughout the rest of her life. And you can begin teaching this skill to
her when she is just a toddler. Children can learn to recognize numbers at a
fairly young age, and you can help solidify what the numbers mean for her by
incorporating counting and number recognition into as many daily activities
as possible. Luckily for you, as a good teaching parent, there are opportunities
everywhere around you to help you do this.

you can see through your window; these are all just a few examples of
where you can see numbers just from your current seat. Any time that you
have downtime with your child, you can point at any one of these numbers
to practice number recognition. Simply asking “what number is this?”
all throughout the day will help your child to remember her numbers.

If your child gets bored
of the question and answer game, you can incorporate counting in to regular
activities to increase the math skills which are associated with number recognition.
After all, learning your numbers doesn’t just mean being able to recognize
them on a piece of paper; it means being able to associate them with what they
mean. When you’re in the grocery store, you can pick up two oranges and
show them to your child, pointing out that you have two of the same item. If
there is a number 2 visible somewhere around you (and believe me, there will
be), you can point it out to draw that crucial link between two items and the
number two.

This kind of activity, pointing
out what number of something there is, will happen an uncountable number of
times throughout the day. Your child will be playing with dolls and you can
ask how many dolls she has. Or it will be story time and you can ask if she
wants to hear one story or two, pointing to the numbers on whatever material
is available around you. And of course, you can also buy toys which specifically
teach numbers to your children to assist them in better learning these skills.

The key to being a good teaching
parent is to be able to recognize all of the different opportunities that there
are to teach your child the skills that she is currently working on learning.
Helping yourself to focus on finding these opportunities and introducing them
in a casual way will make the whole learning process easier on both of you.
Your child will know her numbers before you know it!
