Fall may be a terrific time of year for fun crafts but you don’t want
to be so focused on the fun that you forget about the great educational opportunities
that the season presents. Sure, it’s great to carve pumpkins and make
Thanksgiving turkeys out of construction paper during these months. But in addition
to these arts and crafts, you can come up with a number of different fall activities
which give your children great educational skills. In fact, there are fall activities
to cover all of the basic school subjects and then some.

Here are some educational fall activities for each subject:

Math

Counting activities using fall themes. The “5
Little Pumpkins” song is just one example of a fall-themed counting
activity that can be enjoyed by kids while they learn some new skills.
Measuring and counting when making fall recipes.
Use cooking activities during the fall to warm up the house or classroom
and get the kids using math during daily activities.

Reading / Writing

There are many different stories out there about fall.
Look for those that are about the changing of seasons as well as those that
relate to the fall holidays.
Work on learning the alphabet by practicing with fall themes.
For example, “P is for Pumpkin” is a good way to work on that
particular letter.
Make a fall story book. Paste leaves and other fall items
into a scrapbook and then work with kids to write a story that relates to
fall.

Science

Go outside and observe the changing seasons with kids.
Keep photo and written journals about these changes.
Fall animals. Activities involving squirrels and acorns
are great for teaching kids about animals and fall.

Social Studies

Use the holidays such as Columbus Day and Thanksgiving to teach kids about
history.
Explore how different cultures explore holidays in different
ways to teach kids about diversity.
If you taught kids about Labor Day early in the season, you can reinforce
these lessons by bringing them back up again. Point out that work
and community are important educational areas at all times of the
year.

Other subjects

Music. Kids love music and they learn a lot from it so
incorporate fall themes and music this season. One great activities making
musical shakers out of gourds by cleaning them out and filling them with beans.
Motor skills. The arts and crafts that are associated with
fall themes are good lessons in and of themselves because they teach kids
motor skills which are an important part of the rest of their education.
Environmental lessons. Kids can learn environmental lessons
during the fall months by getting out and exploring nature. Take kids hiking
or camping before it gets too cold and use it as a way to teach them about
how to treat the earth kindly and why that’s important.

Preschool September Themes

September is rapidly
coming to a close but that doesn’t mean that it’s too late to incorporate
some great September themes into your preschool lesson plans.
September is a fun month because it’s all about going back to school,
meeting new people and getting ready for the holidays ahead. That makes September
a terrific month for transitional themes that allow you to really explore some
creative lessons. You can begin teaching fall themes during the month of September
but you can also use themes that aren’t related to any particular season
so it’s still an in-between kind of month.

In
terms of holidays, the big one in September is Labor Day.
Of course, that’s passed now but that doesn’t mean that the
important lessons it brings with it should be over. Reinforce what the preschoolers
learned about work and community all year long. September usually isn’t
a terrifically busy month so it’s a great time to do some community
service with preschoolers. You can make sandwiches to be taken
to a soup kitchen or you can have the kids learn a song and go share it
with the elderly at a nearby home. Set something up with someone in your
community to help kids learn that the important lessons of Labor
Day should be lived out all year long.

September
is a great month for all kinds of outdoor activities. It’s usually
not too cold in most places to really get out and enjoy the weather. Take the
kids outside for lots of physical education. Go on field trips and treasure
hunts. Have the kids start noticing what is changing in the area, such as the
changing leaves as well as subtler changes in the weather. September is a great
month for taking the time to help kids notice what’s going on in the world
around them.

Of course, there
are plenty of indoor activities that are great for September as well. Did you
know that September is classical music month? This makes it
a terrific month to incorporate music themes into your children’s
days. Classical music CD’s and DVD’s for kids can be used
during rest times. During more active times, children can learn to make this
kind of music themselves. They’ll have fun doing it, build up their motor
skills and probably even experience a boost in self-esteem from the praise they’ll
get for performing for family and friends. You can incorporate short
lessons about the history of classical music to supplement this type of theme.

Interestingly, September
is also National Chicken Month. This is terrific because September
is a great time to teach kids a lot of lessons about nutrition.
This can sometimes be difficult to do in the months that follow since we all
make exceptions to our dietary rules for Halloween, Thanksgiving and the Winter
Holidays. But in September, we can eat relatively healthy. Teaching
kids about the health benefits of chicken compared to red meat and
of free-range or organic chicken as compared to other chicken can be part of
the chicken theme for September. Of course, coloring activities and cooking
activities will go well with these. Even physical education can be worked in;
a group of preschoolers can play chicken, chicken, turkey instead of
duck, duck, goose.

September may be
more than halfway over but there is still time to incorporate new September
themes into your preschooler’s day. And of course, some of these
themes can easily spill over into next month which means that all your planning
will actually be done in advance!

Why Music Is Important In Preschool

you believe that your preschooler inherently knows what is good for her? Maybe
that’s not always true (after all, she’ll grab the tater tots over
the spinach every single time) but in the case of loving music, she’s

children love music. Some naturally start to dance when they hear it. Others
enjoy clapping along in a group with sing-song games. And many enjoy singing
to themselves or with others. This love for music is natural, and it’s
something that’s great for your child.

That’s because
music
is important to the healthy development of your child. In the preschool years,
love of music remains mostly uninhibited by the influences from the outside
world (like being too embarrassed to sing aloud). This encourages the growth
of creative impulse in your preschooler. But more than just encouraging creativity,
supporting music for your preschooler also helps to forge important pathways

children in developing improved spatial-temporal reasoning. This refers to the
type of reasoning that allows you to look at a two-dimensional picture and manipulate
it in your mind. It forms the foundation for logical thinking. This is interesting
because kids who listen to music are often thought of purely as creative individuals,
and often as dreamers, but kids who are musical in preschool may actually be
more logical thinkers as they get older.

Musical kids will
also be better able to control their bodies as they grow up. They’ll learn
movement more quickly and potentially be better athletes because of this. The
reason for this is that music gives us a sense of rhythm. Kids who not only
listen to music but who are also encouraged to play musical games and enjoy

in preschool, they really do just simply love it. For kids, music is fun. And
that kind of fun translates into a joy that is beneficial to your child overall.
After all, picture a class of kids who are asked to sit at a desk all day and
then picture a class of kids who have music incorporated into every lesson.
