Your
child’s room should be a safe place where she can go to enjoy her
playtime, take her naps and get securely tucked in at night. For this
reason, it’s important that you help your child inject a little
bit of her personality into the room by decorating it in a manner that
reflects who she is. At the same time, you want to make sure that the
room is decorated in a way that visually appeals to you, is efficient
for getting the day’s activities done and makes the maximum use
of space with the least amount of clutter.

Here are a
few decorating ideas that can get you started on the way to creating a
safe, fun, aesthetically pleasing room for your kids:

Have
a theme.
Doing your decorating around a theme helps to streamline
the look of the room so that even when it’s a little bit cluttered,
it looks organized. The theme should be something that appeals to your
child so that she can feel comfortable in the room. For example, a sports
theme or a theme from a favorite storybook tale.

Keep in mind
that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to decorate around a
theme. It’s not necessary to go out and buy matching bed sheets,
wallpaper and lamp shades in the theme that you’ve set up. Instead,
use the theme loosely to create a sense of fun in the room. Inexpensive
items like wall socket covers and framed posters can supplement your own
decorating in the room.

Create
decorations with your kids.
Children feel special when the things
that they create are showcased in their homes. So letting your kids help
make the items that will be used to decorate their rooms serves a multi-fold
purpose. It allows for some cheap decorating, which will give your child’s
room a sense of her personality while encouraging her to feel good about
her creative self. Sit down together and do drawings for the room (perhaps
along a theme as described above) and then go shopping together for inexpensive
frames to hang this art work. Papier mache sculptures, themed dioramas
and other projects can be used to further decorating your kids’
rooms.

An
art wall.
In addition to the room décor, or as an alternative
to it, you can set aside a portion of your child’s room for ever-changing
art work. A particular wall could be designated for hanging projects,
a child’s easel could be set up in a corner or a chalkboard could
be put up on the back of the bedroom door. These are all conducive to
encouraging your child’s creativity and productivity while adding
a little bit of color and personality to the room.

Keep
it kid-sized.
If you want your kids to keep clean rooms, then
you want to make it easy for them to put stuff away. While it may seem
more efficient to buy the tall bookcase to hold the books and toys of
your kids, it’s actually better to use kid-sized furniture in these
rooms. This also helps you in limiting what you keep in your kids’
rooms, thereby reducing clutter naturally. Short bookcases, cubby holes
and other organizing furniture are great for giving the room a clean look.

Remember
it’s going to change.
The furniture, theme and general
décor of your child’s room is going to change over time,
probably even more quickly than you’d like. Kids grow up and have
different needs and interests and their rooms will (and should) reflect
that growth. So, don’t spend too much money on particular items.
Don’t get obsessed with getting the “right” materials.
And don’t be afraid to let the room change with your child’s
personality. This should be a safe, happy place for her so let her shine
there.

One Response to Decorating Ideas For Kids Rooms

  1. You offer wonderful advice. If I may add one bit that I use professionally. Color… One of the least expensive and effective ways to add energy and design to a room is by painting it. Altering one wall with an accent color really changes the overall impression of a room. Even simpler, I’ll leave the walls alone and paint the ceiling a sky blue or sun yellow. To stretch your budget even further, paint traditionally goes on sale during labor day and memorial day weekends. Also, when at the home centers alway glance at the mis mixed paint. One persons mistake could be a $15.00 – $20.00 saving to you. Thanks for the opportunity to weigh in- Aaron@EmbellishmentsStudio.com
